Ryan Murphy’s wildly popular American Horror Story premiered its fifth season last night with the inclusion of pop superstar Lady Gaga.
The 90-minute extravaganza introduced our favourite actors of the series in their new roles, as well as some new faces; namely Gaga who played hotel hostess ‘The Countess’.
Opening strong, the show teased several plot points within the premiere including a man sewn in a mattress, found hairless and shrieking by two poor Swedish tourists.
Gaga was joined by on-screen lover Matt Bomer, as the two participated in a steamy foursome that led to the couple slitting their companies throats and feasting on their blood. We do not know yet if they are vampires, succubus’ or just freaky yet, but we’re dying to know.
Wes Bently appears to hold the core storyline of the season, centring around his missing son (who happens to be within the hotel itself), his difficult marriage to ‘Alex’ (Chloë Sevigny) and a mystery person targeting him. He plays detective ‘John Lowe’ who deals with cases such as an eye-gouged man whose penis had been glued inside his mistress. So there seems to be plenty more where that came from!
Fan favourite Sarah Paulson plays heroin addict ‘Sally’ who is already proving to be an interesting character who was shown in a flashback to be thrown from a high level of the hotel. How she survived, or whether she may be a ghost like season one remains a mystery.
Kathy Bates plays concierge ‘Iris’, a matriarchal figure similar to last season, and scene stealer Denis O’Hare her sidekick, the fabulously named ‘Liz Taylor’ a transgendered enigma, whose shaping up to be our favourite character.
‘Christine Estabrook’ made a fleeting appearance as ‘Marcy’, the realtor from season one, further connecting the series.
The most uncomfortable and controversial scene of the episode, that’s taken the internet by shock horror, is Max Greenfield’s appearance. After injecting heroin the character ‘Gabriel’ was, for lack of a better word, raped by a creature with a sharp metal strap on to his death. We’re hoping this isn’t the last we see of Greenfield. With a few other stomach turning scenes and the torture of the two Swedish tourists, this seasons proving to be one of the most horrific since the beginning.
Gaga’s acting was a pleasant surprise, although she didn’t tackle much material, the scenes she was in she worked, her on-screen presence is captivating. We’re excited to see what more she has to offer.
Veteran Evan Peters as well as Angela Bassett have yet to check in to the hotel, so we look forward to seeing what they bring to the table. Emma Roberts, Naomi Campell, Lily Rabe and Finn Wittrock are also waiting in the wings, which has us excited.
While we love us some Jessica Lange, and we’re devastated at her decision to exit after four season, so far we’re not missing her presence too much and with actors like Bomer and Bently stepping up from supporting roles to starring, we’re enjoying the change. It’s one of the great things about the franchise, and with Ryan Murphy over the past few seasons, we’re sure he has a couple more stars joining he’s yet to announce.
What did you think of the new episode?
