Hanky: The Latest Gay Hookup App

If you’ve had enough of Grindr, Tinder, Growlr, Scruff and the enumerate amount of other gay hookup apps, perhaps it’s time to give Hanky a go!

This ‘exclusive’ app means that you can not use the service unless enough members (three) vote you in, meaning theoretically there are no blank profiles or catfishes.

Setting up your own profile is easy enough, though it is a little jarring that you must enter your ‘position’: Top, bottom, or versatile. With no option for ‘prefer not to say’ or ‘i’d rather keep my dignity’. Perhaps this is part of the ‘no time-wasters’ policy.

Under an hour later and a text notifies me I’m in. Here the app looks pretty similar to Tinder from the six photo’s option to the swiping left or right to choose who you do and do not want to speak to.

All the regular profile options are there but a particularly hilarious one that caught my eye was the ability to describe your style: Aggressive, filthy, flamboyant, gagger, sarcastic, power-bottom etc.

You also have the option to activate a ‘Looking now’ option for 1, 6, or 12 hours that basically signifies others in your area you’re looking for immediate fun. If they are too, cut the chat and meet!

What’s nifty about this particular app is that it tells you before hand if somebody else has already liked you, so you will know if you match or not. When a match is made the app automatically messages the person ‘hi’ to begin a dialogue for you.

Going through the option of men, there are few anywhere close to my location and, perhaps due to its relative newness, the calibre is drastically lower than expected. After 50 guys, only one managed to get the like button. The exclusivity may not be on point.

The app has been making headlines due to its clique mentality as users relying on the decision of members may see themselves turned away for not being attractive enough, or a ‘creep’.

When asked on the stringent rules, co-founder Jonas Cronfield said:

“For a long time, we’ve been fed up with the vibe of the other gay apps. We will probably never have 5 million members like some of these other apps because so many get turned away. But we’ll choose quality over quantity any day.”

“Sure, big numbers are nice, but none of our competitors have got the actual experience right – something we will never compromise on. Our user are nicer and more sexy.”
