With the stunning triumph that was Grease: Live earlier this year, everyone is on tenderhooks for what NBC will be doing to top them with Hairspray!
After strong performances with Peter Pan, The Wiz and The Sound Of Music, NBC were completely eclipsed when Fox ushered out Grease with an all star cast, upping the bar from what NBC had set.
Now the network are pulling no punches in taking back the live musical format calling on a number of household names to fill the roster, and even throwing a little shade into their promo; notice “from the network that ushered in live tv musicals”.
The short preview displays all of the celebs in costume as we catch glipses of Ariana Grande, Kristen Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson and Derek Hough among others. They will be playing Penny Pingleton, Velma Von Tussle, Motormouth Maybelle and Corny Collins respectively.
We even have our gay fave Garrett Clayton as leading man Link Larkin! Also, gay icon Harvey Fierstein will reprise his role as Edna Turnblad, a role that previously won him a Tony. Filling out the LGBT lineup is Sean Hayes and Rosie O’Donnell who are both set to guest star in cameos!
We’re a little too old for Disney now but Liv and Maddie star Dove Cameron takes the stage as Amber Von Tussle, double Tony-winner star of screen and stage Andrea Martin is poised to play Prudy Pingleton while Martin Short rounds out the cast appearing as Wilbur Turnblad.
Oh wait! There’s one more major role unaccounted for; newcomer Maddie Baillio is set to take the screen as Tracey Turnblad, given the distinct lack of larger actresses to choose from. We’re sure she’ll kill it, we just hope her career takes off better than Nikki Blonsky’s!
With musical numbers from the original Broadway numbers, December can’t come soon enough.
